Watch: Steve Smith tried AB De Villiers' shot but got hit by Lockie Ferguson

The Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders meet in Sharjah for the 41st match of the Indian Premier League. Toss winner and KKR skipper Eoin Morgan asked the opponents to bat first earlier.

DC made the unusual decision to have Steve Smith the opening act. In the middle, Steve Smith partnered with Shikhar Dhawan, and the pair looked solid right away. Before Dhawan was dismissed for 24, the pair put up 35 runs for the first wicket.

Smith, on the other hand, went with the flow. At a strike rate of 114.71, Australia's current best batsman smashed four boundaries. When DC was 72/2 in the 13th over, the Australian veteran was contemplating a change of pace. They had earlier also lost Shreyas Iyer, who was in fine form, for only one run. Sunil Narine outperformed him with an impressive performance.

Steve-Smith

In spite of losing two wickets, DC had a boost from Steve Smith and Rishabh Pant in the middle of the innings. Smith attempted to play a new shot after learning that the squad needed fast runs.

Smith has a history of hitting some interesting shots and catching people off guard. He attempted to do the same thing against KKR this time as well, but it backfired horribly for him. When Steve Smith faced up against pacer Lockie Ferguson, he took a hard hit to the box. A stalwart in front of the wicket in an attempt to hit the ball through the leg side.

Ferguson surprised Smith by delivering a slower ball that was sinking in front of Smith's chest. However, the Australian barely managed to obtain an inside edge before connecting with the groyne, which caused him some discomfort.
