Sourav Ganguly supports the appointment of "phenomenal" Rohit Sharma as full-time white ball captain for Team India
Since leaving this year's T20 World Cup, Team India has gone through many changes, with Rahul Dravid taking on the role of head coach and Rohit Sharma taking on the full-time captaincy for the whitball. The removal of Virat Kohli from the captaincy of the White Ball has caused polarizing opinions among fans and experts.
Many have pointed out that Kohli deserves to stay as an ODI skipper at least until the ODI World Cup 2023. But BCCI President Sourav Ganguly believes Rohit deserves the full-time role and has proven his ancestry as a white ball skipper in the past. In an exclusive conversation with News18, Ganguly confirmed Rohit's record, mentioning that the strike had led India to an Asia Cup victory without Kohli's presence in the squad.
He also said Rohit's record of five IPL titles with Mumbai Indians (MI) is enough to justify his role. "Of course. That's why the voters supported him. He will find a way to do well, and I hope he does. His record for the IPL (Mumbai Indians) is phenomenal ... to win five titles", he said.
"He was India's captain at the Asian Cup a couple of years ago, which India won too, and India won without Kohli. Winning a title without him spoke volumes of the strength of this team. So he did well in big tournaments. He did a good team. Hopefully they can all change it, "he added.
In September before the T20 World Championship, Kohli had announced to fans that he would be stepping down as T20I captain after the tournament, but would remain as ODI skipper. The Men in Blue had a disastrous campaign, falling off the Super 12 stage and also losing to arch rivals Pakistan.

After the tournament, India hosted New Zealand in a T20I home series and fans saw Rohit take over as the T20I skipper. The MI captain led India to a clean 3-0.
After the two-game test series against the Blackcaps, the BCCI dropped the bombshell announcement in which Rohit was named full-time white ball captain. Following the announcement, Ganguly defended the decision, stating that a distinction was needed between white ball and red ball cricket.
