Mahmud has been named to replace Shakib on the Bangladesh squad for the New Zealand tour

Bangladesh has named its 18-man squad for its tour of New Zealand, which consists of two tests.

The President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Nazmul Hassan, accepted Shakib Al Hasan's official request to cancel the tour of New Zealand. Bangladesh has chosen an equivalent replacement for Shakib in Fazle Mahmud, who is a top notch batter and left arm spinner.

The 34-year-old has a wealth of experience in the world-class community of Bangladesh, having played 94 games since his debut in 2004. He has 5353 runs averaging 34.75 and also won 32 wickets.

He represented the Tigers in ODIs back in 2018 when Zimbabwe toured Bangladesh, although the trips weren't too memorable as he registered ducks in both games.

The two-game test series will be played as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23, with Bangladesh currently at the bottom of the table with zero points after Pakistan swept them clean at home. New Zealand are ahead of Bangladesh thanks to a draw in Kanpur against India, which scored four points.
