Andy Flower resigns from coaching role at Punjab Kings: report
Assistant coach Andy Flower has split from Punjab Kings and is expected to play on one of the new teams before IPL 2022. Former Zimbabwe captain Flower, who coached and led the national team in England for more than a decade, was hired for his first IPL stint before the 2020 season.
"He recently sent his resignation to the team. He has been accepted. There is a good chance he will move to one of the new teams (Lucknow or Ahmedabad)," a BCCI official told PTI.
It is quite possible that the 53-year-old will play a bigger role in his next IPL assignment. Flower has worked alongside head coach Anil Kumble for the past two seasons. The development comes at a time when K L Rahul, who has skippered the Punjab Kings for the past two seasons, is expected to switch to the Lucknow franchise.
Punjab wanted to keep Rahul, but he didn't want to stay.
It remains to be seen whether Flower will remain head coach of the CPL Saint Lucia Kings franchise, which is owned by the same consortium that owns Punjab Kings. Saint Lucia was runner-up in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
During his time with the English team, Flower led the team to the 2010 T20 World Cup title and number one in the test standings. Wasim Jaffer was Punjab's punch coach and Jonty Rhodes field coach last season.
Punjab only kept two players - Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh - ahead of the January mega auction. You'll be keeping an eye on a number of youngsters at the auction along with a few established names.
