5 players who could lead Delhi Capitals in the absence of Shreyas Iyer

The right-handed batsman Shreyas Iyer had been injured during the 1st ODI between India and England. The incident took place in the 8th over of the game, where he put a full-stretch dive at the extra region to prevent the ball from touching the boundary rope.

However, as a result, his left shoulder had partially dislocated as he went back to the pavilion with some pain. Such injuries would not be fully recovered in a short period as it takes more than weeks or sometimes it might lead to surgeries.

Considering Iyer's injury, the skipper of Delhi Capitals might miss the first half of the IPL if his injury was too deep on that area. So, Delhi Capitals would be looking to find a replacement who can lead the team in the absence of Shreyas Iyer.

5.Ravichandran Ashwin

The Tamil Nadu based player will be one among the players to be in the mind of the Delhi Capitals management and the head coach Ricky Ponting. As a captain, Ashwin has some good numbers in IPL and previously was the skipper of Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) who led the side to win 12 out of their 28 games he played. Moreover, he has the ability to take risks in crunch situations of the game.

4. Ajinkya Rahane

Everyone knows the Ravichandran Ashwin is better than Ajinjya Rahane in the captainship role. But Ajinkya Rahane is well known for his cool mentality and genuine decision making on the field. He has also led the Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiant in the Indian Premier League so far.

Moreover, he led the young Indian side to win the Test series against Australia in Australia which doesn't have the services of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. So, we can expect Ajinkya Rahane to be the next captain for the Delhi Capitals franchise.

3. Rishabh Pant

It will be surprising to see the left-hander on the list. The young lad is a very good observer of the game which we witnessed through the time he spent with the Indian team. Moreover, it will help him to know his responsibilities in the filed.

His wicket-keeping ability might let him sort out the conditions and can give ideas for the bowlers according to the gameplay. The management of the Delhi Capitals can try him if they want something different ahead of the IPL 2021.

2. Prithvi Shaw

From his early days, Prithvi Shaw has shown his ability with the bat and with leadership skills as well. He was the skipper of the India Under-19 team which won the 2018 Under-19 World Cup title.

Moreover, the 21-year-old led the young Mumbai side to clinch the title in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy. He has the ability to score runs in any kind of situation for his side and can handle the situation with a cool presence of mind.

1. Steve Smith

The Australian batsman will be the first choice for the management and Ricky Ponting to hand over the leadership role. He has a lot of experience in his pocket and has the ability to easily read out the condition of the game.

During the IPL 2017, he was the skipper of the Rising Pune Supergiant team which won 10 out of their 15 games under his captaincy. Moreover, they finished as the runner up during the league. So, if Delhi Capitals would be looking for an overseas captain, then it will be Steve Smith who can do the role better than others.
