Jhye Richardson to replace Hazlewood for the second Test; Warner plays despite a damaged rib

X-rays have given Warner a break as Australia was confident enough of their fitness to confirm their XI the day before the game

David Warner will play through the pain of a damaged rib in the second Test against England, while Jhye Richardson has been confirmed to replace Josh Hazlewood for the day-night game.

Warner did not play at the gabba during England's second inning and did not hit during the short chase after being hit by Ben Stokes on day two. X-rays cleared him from a break and Australia was confident enough to confirm their XI the day before the game.

He didn't look comfortable during a net session Tuesday night and just had to deal with throwdowns instead of the bowlers.

Pat Cummins said a pain reliever injection in the ribs was an option for Warner but wasn't part of the plan ahead of the game. He also expected Warner to take his place in the slip-ups.

"If Davey didn't feel like he could be as good as normal, he wouldn't be playing," said Cummins. “Don't think he'll hit differently than he normally would. “He hit yesterday with a little discomfort, knowing Davey won't miss him. He'll be fine when the adrenaline rises. It's not like a broken bone getting worse. "

Warner returned to the side for the final two Tests against India last season when he was severely handicapped by the groin injury sustained during the one-day streak.

Richardson, meanwhile, was the expected replacement for Hazlewood, who was unavailable due to a side injury sustained at Gabba. He made his test debut against Sri Lanka in 2019 before sustaining a serious shoulder injury that required two surgeries.

"Jhye has fought his way back since, but when we got back in 2019 he'd play two really good Tests and his shoulder injury was on the verge of an Ashes streak and a World Cup," said Cummins. "He's worked incredibly hard, had a great start this year for WA and we think he's going to fire.

"He's really nifty, can swing the ball both ways and squeeze the ball. He's a little faster than you think. He can be around 140 km / h. In shield cricket he sometimes has 20 overs for 20 runs thrown. Josh is a big gap. " to fill, but we're really confident that Jhye will fill in right away. "
