Ben Stokes will remain a Durham player until at least the end of the 2024 season after signing a new three-year contract extension with the club.

The 30-year-old Stokes recently returned to the field on the first Ashes Test in Brisbane with England after missing much of the 2021 season trying to get a grip on his mental health following a badly broken finger.

Much of Stokes' rehabilitation work prior to his comeback was done at Riverside, where he made his 2010 County Championship debut against Essex. Since then he has played 64 first-class games for the club, scoring 3,611 best of 185 runs against Lancashire.

More recently, however, his requirements as an English player in all formats have limited his availability to Durham. He has played 72 Tests so far, scored 4650 runs at 36.61 and taken 163 wickets as well as 101 ODIs and 34 T20Is.

"I look forward to spending another three years with Durham," said Stokes. "I've had some fantastic memories of the club over the years and I look forward to seeing more of them in the future."

"Ben is one of the best players in the world and while we may not see him as often as we'd like, his influence at the club remains huge."

Durham's Director of Cricket, Marcus North added, “Ben is one of the best players in the world and while we may not see him as often as we'd like, his impact on the club remains enormous.

"It is fantastic to see Ben fit and healthy again, having left his time outside the game and now playing for England again in the Ashes. We are very pleased that Ben Durham has agreed to his future for another three years. "
