Dropping myself is an option, says Eoin Morgan

In the run-up to the T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman in 2021, England captain Eoin Morgan has made a huge statement about his dismal record with the bat. English cricketer Morgan was a spectator in the team's first pre-tournament friendly match against India.

He has said that if his bad form with the bat persists throughout the tournament, he may consider withdrawing from the competition.

A slump in form is affecting Morgan's ability to score runs. He has only amassed 133 in 17 games this season. His statistics will become much worse if his 47* score is left out.

Asked whether he would be prepared to drop himself, Morgan said: “That is always an option. I will not stand in the way of the team winning the World Cup. I’ve been short on runs but my captaincy has been pretty good.”

For the first warm-up game, Jos Buttler captained England against India as Eoin Morgan rested after his busy IPL 2021 schedule, leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the final and finishing runners-up. Morgan stated he will continue to take chances when batting despite his poor record.

“I wouldn’t be standing here if I hadn’t come out of every bad run of form that I’ve ever had. The nature of T20 cricket and where I bat means I always have to take high-risk options. I’ve come to terms with that,” he added.

Meanwhile, he doesn't believe that his performance as a batsman will have an effect on his position as captain. In 2016, he led England to the World T20 Cup finals, and in 2019, he won the World T20 Championship.

“I’ve always managed to compartmentalise both and treat them as two different challenges. Not being a bowler, being a little bit older and contributing less in the field, I’ve loved the role of captain. You get two bites at the cherry when it comes at impacting the game,” he further said.

The 23rd of October will see England play the West Indies in Dubai in the campaign opener.
