Rohit Sharma likely to lead India in Test cricket, an official announcement to be made soon

The surprising resignation from Virat Kohli has made the Indian selectors think about the next captain for the longest format of the game. After contrasting defeat against the Proteas in the Test series, the 33-year-old batsman made the announcement and decided to step down from the leadership.

As of now, every Indian fan would is eager to know the next skipper for the longest format of the game. Meanwhile, according to the recent reports, the limited-overs skipper Rohit Sharma is likely to lead India once he makes his comeback to the team.

However, one of the cricket experts and the former Indian cricketer, Aakash Chopra didn't want the 34-year-old to lead Team India in Test cricket. Moreover, Rohit Sharma has missed the recently concluded Test series against South Africa as he is suffering from a hamstring injury for more than a year.

Why can’t he be the captain in Tests too: Ravi Shastri

Having a look at the recent performance of the Indian team, they have lost the three-match Test series against South Africa by 2-1 and has also been whitewashed by the hosts in the three-match ODI series as well.

Notably, the Indian team has won only one out of the ten One-days that they played in the SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) without Rohit Sharma. With him, the side has dominated the hosts by clinching 8 out of the 10 matches they play.

However, a recent report claims, "Without any doubt, Rohit Sharma will be the new test captain of India. Rohit was named vice-captain before the South Africa series & will now be elevated as captain of the team. The announcement will be made soon," a senior official from BCCI has quoted by InsideSport.

Moreover, the former head coach of the Indian cricket team, Ravi Shastri has come up with a statement regarding Rohit Sharma's captaincy in Test cricket. "If Rohit is fit, why can’t he be the captain in Tests too. He was appointed vice-captain for the South Africa series but he couldn’t go there because of injuries.

So why not, if he was made the vice-captain, why can’t he be promoted to captaincy. Rohit’s vice-captain has to be seen. Rahul Dravid has to see who that person could be because that player has to be a certainty in the playing XI," Ravi Shastri was quoted as saying in India Today.

"I think, why name the vice-captain at all? Decide on the tour who is the most experienced player, who is playing well. You announce your vice-captain in advance, and later you realise that your vice-captain doesn’t fit in your XI," Shastri said.

"Rishabh is a tremendous young player. As a coach, I was very fond of him, his attitude and the good thing about him was that he would always listen to you.

A lot of people say, he always does what he wants but that’s not true. He reads the game well and would always put my team effort first than self. So he should always be kept in mind for leadership," he added.
