BCCI talks to Virat Kohli about ODI Captaincy Future

Shortly after Rohit Sharma was named India's new T20I captain, it was heard that the BCCI top members would speak to Virat Kohli about his captain's future at one-day internationals. Sources in the BCCI told NDTV that the board of directors would like to relieve Kohli of the captaincy burden of limited overs cricket so he can focus on his punches and return to his dominant form. As for the upcoming series of home tests against New Zealand, Virat Kohli has opted for the 1st Test, which will begin in Kanpur on November 25th. The team is led by Vice-Captain Ajinkya Rahane in Kohli's absence. Sources went on to say that Rohit Sharma will be rested for the two-match test series against the Blackcaps as there is very little gap between the second test match and the start of the Indian test series in South Africa.

Rohit Sharma was named captain of the T20I team on Tuesday when the BCCI announced a 16-person squad for the 3-game series against New Zealand, which kicks off in Jaipur on November 17. India will host three test matches in South Africa from December 17th. This is followed by an ODI series with three games and a T20I series with four games. The Indian team have just returned from a disappointing season at the ICC T20 World Cup in which the team led by Virat Kohli failed to make it through to the semi-finals after losing to Pakistan and New Zealand.

Kohli was named captain of the Limited Overs Teams in January 2017 after former captain MS Dhoni stepped down from the role. He has led the test team since early 2015. Kohli has led India in 95 ODIs and has a 70 percent win rate with 65 wins and 27 losses, which is the best among the captains who have led India in 90 or more games. He is also India's most successful test captain in terms of number of games won. Kohli led India to the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and the semifinals of the ICC World Cup 2019, but so far as captain has not won any silver in global tournaments.
