IPL 2021: Delhi Capitals appoint Rishabh Pant as captain

The upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) starts on 9th March. Ahead of the IPL 2021, the Delhi Capitals appointed Rishabh Pant as their skipper in the absence of Shreyas Iyer.

The Delhi-based IPL franchise has played very well in the last couple of years under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. But, they have been hit by a huge blow just before start of IPL month.

Iyer was part of India's ODI squad for the series against England. During the 2nd ODI, he dislocated his left shoulder and was ruled out of the 3rd game as well.

Rishabh Pant replaces Shreyas Iyer as a captain:

With Iyer ruled out of the upcoming season of IPL, the franchise was looking for a captaincy. Though they have the likes of Smith, Ashwin and Dhawan as their senior players, they decided to give the captaincy role to the wicket-keeper batsman.

On his new role, Rishabh Pant said, "Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I've always harboured."

"And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. I am truly grateful, especially to our team owners, who considered me capable enough for this role. With an amazing coaching staff and a plethora of accomplished seniors around me, I can't wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals."

The Delhi Capitals will play their first game under the new captain against Chennai Super Kings on 10th April at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
